Bird & Wildlife Watching
Sierra Vista’s bird watching and wildlife viewing areas are world-renowned! Nearby canyons are migratory corridors and critical nesting habitat for myriad species of birds, from hummingbirds to waterfowl, rapports to songbirds. Lush protected riparian areas and forested mountainsides are the ideal home for a diverse array of animals from the white-nosed coatis to colorful Gila Monsters to gray fox and javelina. While there are many places to explore, two stand out as ideal starting points.
Ramsey Canyon Preserve
Birders travel from all over the world to visit Ramsey Canyon Preserve where many rare birds are sighted each year. Recently, people flocked from far and wide to see flame-colored tanagers and tufted flycatchers, rarely seen this side of the U.S. Mexico border. But it’s the majestic elegant trogons and many varieties of hummingbirds visiting the sycamore-lined canyon every year that draw people back time and time again. The trail, which meanders along the banks of a flowing spring, is also lined with an extraordinary variety of plant life. In the fall, the maple and oak trees put on a fiery display of yellow, orange, and red. In this festival of flora and fauna, you never know what you might find.
The San Pedro House
The San Pedro House is the ideal gateway to the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, a long green ribbon of life that stretches north from the border with Mexico and brings more than 250 species of migratory birds through the area each year. That doesn’t even include the over 100 species of breeding birds that make nests in this cottonwood-shaded corridor where the San Pedro River flows. They share this oasis with 84 species of mammals and 41 species of reptiles and amphibians. The ideal place for a leisurely walk, the San Pedro River is one of Arizona’s greatest natural treasures. Just ask the birders, they already know all about it.
Weekly nature and birding walks at the preserve and river are led by volunteer docents and hummingbird bandings are held seasonally as well. Check this calendar of events for upcoming activities.
